If you’re dating or married to someone with ADHD, you may feel like you’re always walking on eggshells. Miscommunications are common, and it can be difficult to know how to best communicate with each other. With a little patience and understanding, you can learn how to effectively communicate with your ADHD partner.

Define what communication means to you

Communication means so much to me; it’s allowing two or more people, or even just one, to exchange ideas and feelings freely. It isn’t only about words; it’s also about body language, facial expressions, and overall attitude.

The most amazing conversations don’t always consist of hundreds of words — sometimes the few but meaningful ones make all the difference.

Being able to communicate with someone in a respectful manner is key and I believe communication between partners with ADHD can be incredibly enriching.

Understand that people with ADHD often have different definitions of communication

One of the most important things to be mindful of is that people living with ADHD often have quite a different definition of communication than the average person. A lot of times, we become easily overwhelmed and frustrated in situations that require patience, careful listening, and staying on track. It can be hard to try and understand our perspective, but engaging respectfully and actively listening can go a long way towards fostering deeper understanding between both parties in any conversation.

Accept that the person with ADHD may not always want to communicate in the same way or at the same time as you do

When one partner in a relationship has ADHD, communication can become difficult at times. Accepting that your partner may not always want to communicate in the same way or at the same time as you do is essential for your relationship. After all, it’s the differences that make us unique and worth celebrating! Instead of focusing on communicating when and how you’d like them to, practice taking some time to understand why they might feel differently — it just might throw a much-needed wrench into preconceived notions about communication.

Try to be patient and understand that sometimes the person with ADHD may need more time to process what you’re saying

It can often be difficult to communicate with a partner with ADHD, but don’t feel overwhelmed! Patience and understanding are key here — allowing your partner the time they need to process what you are saying is a great way to approach conversations. Don’t forget, we’re all human — listening is an important part of communication, so give your ADHD partner the same respect and attention you would anyone else. It’ll make things flow much smoother!

If possible, try to find a compromise that works for both of you when it comes to communicating

Finding ways to compromise can be key to having a successful relationship. Having disagreements is inevitable, but with good communication and understanding, it is possible to work out a compromise that works for both of you. It’s not always easy — but with patience, openness, and mutual respect — compromise can be achieved. So the next time important conversations arise in your relationship, remember to treat each other with kindness and try to find the middle ground on which you both can agree.

If you’re in a relationship with someone who has ADHD, it’s important to try to understand how they view communication. It may be different from your own definition, and that’s okay. Just be patient and try to work together to find a compromise that works for both of you. Do you have any tips for communicating with partners who have ADHD? Share them in the comments below!
